Island Stories | Episode 1 – Rob da Bank

  • Island Life

Spence Willard are proud to support Island Stories,
bringing you the unique stories of those that live
on the Isle of Wight

Our first guest on the podcast is DJ and Music Producer Rob da Bank, founder of the Bestival brand and a real force on the Island. We interviewed him at his amazing house near Yarmouth – right on the water.
The first question on the podcast is always going to be the same: Why the Island? As we chatted – surrounded by memorabilia from his long career in the music industry he tells us: “Coming to live on the Island was a happy accident… It’s home and it’s perfect for us!”
Rob is best-known on the Island for starting Bestival – or ‘boutique festival’ – which ran until 2016, before it moved to the mainland and is now known as Camp Bestival. When asked if the event is coming back to the Island he says: “I get asked that at least once a week. I’d never say never. Bestival was racy, it was mad, it was lunacy on a big scale – in a very respectful, safe way. Bestival is 20 years old, something might happen, now I’ve said that people are going to think… – well, we’ll see!”

Finally on the podcast we’ll always ask the same quickfire 5 questions about the Island.

So here’s Rob da Bank’s 5 Island things:

1. Favourite place to eat or grab a coffee?
PO41 Coffee House, Yarmouth
2. Best place for a walk, swim or meditation?
Bottom of my garden
3. Favourite Island activity?
Walking Tennyson Down with my wife
4. Which Island charity is closest to your heart?
Isle of Wight Youth Trust
5. What do you love most about this island of ours?
Idiosyncratic mix of people

Thanks Rob for being our first guest and don’t forget to subscribe and tune-in next week for our next Island Story!

Each and every one of us has a unique Island story, what is yours?
Uncovering the characters and personalities of those who’ve made the Isle of Wight – home.
