Island Stories | Episode 3 – Derek Sandy

  • Island Life

Spence Willard are proud to support Island Stories,
bringing you the unique stories of those that live
on the Isle of Wight

This week on the podcast we meet musical legend Derek Sandy – an Islander who almost needs no introduction. Having arrived here one winter 20 years ago from Trinidad and Tobago, Derek has established himself as the ultimate ‘party man’ bringing – as he puts it – Caribbean vibes to the Isle of Wight. A stint on Britain’s Got Talent in 2019 built his reputation across the country and he’s always in demand for events and private parties UK-wide.

Derek tells us how 20 years ago he battled drug addiction and had given up on music before arriving on the Isle of Wight – which saved him, handing him back his career. He also talks of how he once supported Bob Marley and the Wailers on tour. He absolutely loves the Island: ‘It reminds me of the Caribbean’ and says ‘I believe I am part of the island and the island is part of me.’

Finally on the podcast we always ask the same quickfire 5 questions about the Island.

So here’s Derek Sandy’s 5 Island things:

1.Favourite place to eat or grab a coffee?
The Hungry Bear, Brading

2.Best place for a walk, swim or meditation?
Appley Tower

3.Favourite Island activity?
Love Mondays

4.Which Island charity is closest to your heart?
Aspire Ryde

5.What do you love most about this island of ours?
The people – typical Islanders – laidback!

Don’t forget to subscribe and tune-in on Wednesday for our next Island Story!

Each and every one of us has a unique Island story, what is yours?
Uncovering the characters and personalities of those who’ve made the Isle of Wight – home.
